This strip was going to have a series of strips about Scientology. In fact, the very first strip already hinted at this. I had even drawn my own version of Xenu.
Then, "Project Chanology" happened – anonymous activists gathering for global protests at Scientology branch offices – and my jokes on the topic suddenly looked rather stale.
The three protesters are based on disguises worn by (in-)famous Chanology protesters. Only one of the slogans of the signs is made up, the rest I've picked up from photos.
The frontispiece disguises are cross-pollinations I came up with on the spur of the moment: The front mask is a hybrid of the Guy Fawkes mask worn by many protesters and the "Walrus" mask worn by John Lennon for the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour.
